Pause workplace mediation: practical approach

The practical response is to revisit suitability when material concerns emerge, rather than treat the original referral as permission to continue regardless of events. The facilitator can explain that the unresolved issue needs a different process, record the procedural reason neutrally and identify the appropriate next contact. A pause should not imply that either party’s account has been accepted as fact.

What to check and record

Any interim arrangements should address the identified risk without being presented as a sanction. Explain confidentiality and its limits. Do not automatically turn the full mediation discussion into an evidence bundle for another decision-maker. Use a separate investigation process where facts need to be established.

Learning for managers

Process success is not synonymous with reaching agreement. Recognising that a process is unsuitable can preserve the opportunity for a fair investigation and avoid putting pressure on someone to settle an unresolved allegation. The useful record explains the route selected and the practical next step without making findings that the facilitator was not appointed to make.
